The meetings and cultural experiences were designed by a team of three Noyce mentors who have the knowledge, background, and teaching experience dealing with students in high needs schools. These mentors not only ran the meetings and set up the field experiences, but they also offered personal support to the scholars and alumni of the programs. Since all of the mentors still have strong ties (either through connections or current employment) to local high needs schools, the scholars had ample opportunities to experience and reflect on issues usually faced by teachers in high needs settings. It is through the support of these mentors, reflective meetings, community service, and field experience that our Noyce scholars are prepared to not only teach in high needs settings but teach in culturally responsive and equitable ways.
